Highly concentrated dispersions of fluorescent organic nanoparticles (FONs), broadly used for optical tracking, bioimaging and drug delivery monitoring, are obtained using a newly designed micromixer chamber involving high impacting flows. Fine size tuning and narrow size distributions are easily obtained by varying independently the flow rates of the injected fluids and the concentration of the dye stock solution. (361 characters)

We report the coupling of dynamic light scattering (DLS) in microfluidics, using a contact-free fibre-optic system, enabling the under-flow characterisation of a range of solutions, dispersions, and structured fluids. The system is evaluated and validated with model systems, specifically micellar and (dilute) polymer solutions, and colloidal dispersions of different radii (∼1–100 nm). (336 characters)

The formation of porous nanostructures on surfaces and the control of their size and shape is fundamental for various applications. The creation of nanotubes is particularly difficult to implement without the aid of hard and rigid templates. Recently, methods that form nanotubular structures in a straightforward manner and without direct templating, e.g. soft templating, have been highly sought after. (346 characters)

The presence of nanoplastics in the ocean and soil demonstrates their global distribution in the environment. Due to their colloidal properties, nanoplastics can influence trace metal speciation in natural matrices, which has been poorly addressed due to the lack of methodology to assess the nanoplastic–metal association in the natural environment. Systemic treatments for ischemic stroke as a disease with high disability and death have been yet unsuccessful. Combined treatments can potentially cause better results in treatment of patients with Stroke. In this study we assessed the neuroprotective effect of modafinil-coated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) in ischemic stroke rats. (312 characters)

Radical polymerization of styrene in aqueous emulsions pressurized by CO2 has been investigated with a view to development of low energy miniemulsion polymerization. The general requirement of high energy mixing to generate miniemulsions comprising sub-micrometer-size monomer droplets has long been an impediment to wide-spread industrial application.
